About Indian Cinema

The Indian film industry is the oldest and the largest in the world with over 1200 movies released annually. The majority of films are made in the South Indian languages mostly Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam, but Hindi films take the largest box office share. Mumbai (Bombay), Chennai (Madras), Kolkata (Calcutta), Bangalore and Hyderabad are the main film production centers. With more than12000 cinema halls, the Indian film industry turn out more than 1000 films a year to hugely appreciative audiences around the world.

The history of Indian Cinema can be traced back to 1896 when the famous Lumiere Brothers' of France demonstrated six soundless short films in Bombay. By 1899, Harishchandra Bhatvadekar made India's first short film. This was one of the major milestone in Indian Cinema. Throughout the first two decades, the trend continued with filmmakers.

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who was generally known as Dada Saheb Phalke produced India's first full length silent film, 'Raja Harishchandra', in 1913. He laid the foundation for the beginning of a regular feature film industry in India. By 1920 there was a regular industry bringing out films starting with 27 per year and reaching 207 films in 1931. Many new companies and film makers came up during that period.

The 1930s saw sweeping changes to the industry, technically and stylistically. The most remarkable thing that happened in Indian film industry was in 1931, when India's first talkie, 'Alam Ara', directed by Ardeshir Irani was released. Dubbed into Hindi and Urdu, the film was a smash hit and a new revolution began in the Indian film industry. It's phenomenal success all over India lead to other 'Talking, Singing and Dancing' productions to be hurriedly put into production. At the same time, it marked the beginning of the Talkie era in South Indian film industries also. The first talkie films in Bengali (Jumai Shasthi), Telugu (Bhakta Prahlad) and Tamil (Kalidass) were released in the same year 1931.

The 30's is recognized as the decade of social protest in the history of India films. In the 30's three major film centres developed which were based in Bombay (Mumbai), Calcutta (Kolkata) and Madras (Chennai). Of these centres, Bombay was known for the making of films geared for national distribution, while Madras and Calcutta were known for their regional films.

From the 1940's to the late 1950's, the films with their concentration on vibrant song and dance, were for many, the most memorable in Indian film history. The 1940s and 1950s also saw the emergence of the 'playback singing', the off-camera voice that performs the songs that the actors and actresses subsequently mime to. Lata Mangeshkar, her sister Asha Bhonsle, Muhammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar etc are the singers who dominated the Hindi film industry. Now music became an important ingredient in Indian cinema.

The 50's was a unique time in Indian cinema, blessed with talented directors and artistes who could stamp their individuality in their work.. The big turning point came in 1953 with the arrival of Bengali director Satyajit Ray and his classic 'Pather Panchali'. International recognition came to it with the Cannes award for the best human document, followed by foreign and national awards.

Apart from Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak and others made internationally acclaimed movies. They are known as the founding fathers of the new cinema in India. While, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Aravindan, Ritwik Ghatak, Rituparna Ghosh were pioneering the nation's art cinema, around the same time India also had a kind of popular cinema with social themes - again, particularly in Hindi - made by commercial film-makers like Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan, Guru Dutt etc. Many of these films no doubt broke records at the box office. eg. Bimal Roy's 'Do Bigha Zamin', Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India', Raj Kapoor's 'Shree 420' and 'Awara', Guru Dutt's 'Pyasa' etc.

Another factor that encouraged truly good Indian cinema was the establishment of National Film Awards, the Film Finance Corporations, the National Film Archives of India and the Film and Television Institute of India. The first International Film Festival in 1952 held at Bombay, Chennai, Delhi and Calcutta had great impact on Indian Cinema. Introduction to international films left a deep impact on Indian film makers.

In the sixties and seventies, big budget films as well as off-beat films increased. The popular Hindi films of this period were: Kamal Amrohi's Pakeeza, Raj Kapoor's Bobby, Ramesh Sippy's Sholay, Kabhi Kabhi, Amar Akbar Anthony, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, and Muqaddar ka Sikandar.

n the South, in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala film directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, M.T. Vasudevan Nair , B.V.Karanth, Girish Karnad, Girish Kasara Valli, G. Aravindan, K. Balachander, K.G. George, P.A. Backer, G.V.Aiyer made some distinguished films.

Pattabhi Rama Reddy ( Damskara ), Adoor Gopalakrishnan (Swayamvaram), M.T. Vasudevan Nair ( Nirmalyam), B.V.Karanth ( Chomana Dudi), Girish Karnad ( Kaadu), Girish Kasara Valli ( Ghatasradha), G. Aravindan's Uttarayanam and Thamp, K. Balachander's Arangetram, Avargal and Apoorva Ragangal, K.G. George's Swapnadanam and P.A. Backer's Chuvanna Vithukal and G.V.Iyer's Hamsageethe, Durai's Pasi were some of the most relevant films of the times.

In the eighties and nineties, Shyam Benegal's Bhumika, Govind Nihlani's Aaghat, Damul (Prakash Jha), 36-Chowringhee Lane (Aparna Sen), New Delhi Times (Ramesh Sharma), Mirch Masala (Ketan Mehta), Rao Saheb (Vijaya Mehta), Debshishu (Utpalendu Chakraborthy), Mahesh Bhatt (Arth), Trishagni (Nabayendu Ghosh), Ijaazat (Gulzar), Umrao Jaan (Muzafar Ali), Dakhal, Paar (Gautam Ghose), Dooratwa, Neem Annapurana, Andhi Gali (Buddhadeb Dasgupta), Aajka Robin Hood (Tapan Sinha), Tabarana Kathe, Bannada Vesha (Girish Kasara Valli), Accident and Swamy (Shanker Naag), Daasi (B. Narasinga Rao) and Roja, Bombay (Maniratnam) were the significant films of this period. In the south, Adoor and Aravindan, consolidated their position in the eighties and nineties with their films Elippathayam, Mukha Mukham, Anantharam, Esthappan, Pokkuveyil, Chidambaram, Mathilukal, Videyan, and Oridath.

But in Hindi commercial cinema, musical love stories become a new trend in the late eighties and nineties. Mr. India, Tezaab, Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, Main Pyar Kiya, Chandni, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Hum Hain Rahi Pyarke, Baazigar, Hum Apake Hai Kaun, Krantiveer, Raja, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Rangeela were some of the popular Hindi films of the last decade.

Now, Indian Cinema especially, Hindi cinema is not only popular in India but in parts of the Middle East, Pakistan, UK and virtually every other place where Indians live. Films like Lagaan, Salaam Bombay and Monsoon Wedding making the international market sit up and take notice definitely indicate that India is poised for bigger things as far as Cinema goes. Monsoon Wedding was the all-time top 10 foreign box-office hits in America.

Today, Indian cinema has reached many a mile stone with advanced technologies using new digital projectors, converting digital format etc.

May 11th, 2007 by Free Britney
We’ve seen a hobo lumberjack.
How, apparently, we’ve seen a hillbilly cheerleader.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, she sets the
celebrity fashion bar even lower.
Britney Spears, sporting a Posh Spice bob wig that appears to have accidentally gone through the washing machine or been urinated on by Jayden James, rocked her standard Elly May Clampett hat, knee-high socks and a revealing one-piece “top” to complete her “look.”
You could that look half high school cheerleader, half Bel Air refugee.
Yes, the red jumper shows off some serious
boobs, and when complemented by circa 1988 tube socks, white tennis shoes, a gold purse and sunglasses best suited for Bono, Britney Spears may have set a new low, even by her godawful (and hilarious) fashion standards.
If that’s even possible.
Or you can even call them standards.
Looking as absurd as ever, the ex-Mrs.
Kevin Federline took a ride around Beverly Hills for a little shopping and coffee. No word if this cowgirl went over to ride Howie day later on.Yeeeeeee-hawwwwww!

America Loves Ricki Lake! May 11th, 2007 by mischalova
Americans love to hate Spencer Pratt.
And they like to look at photos of
Eva Longoria nude.
Neither of these facts come as a shock to us. But we were surprised to learn that people really, love to read about
Ricki Lake.
According to the Us Weekly website, the magazine’s recent cover story about a bikini-clad Lake losing 125 pounds was the third most popular article in the history of that online destination. You won’t be taken aback by the two topics it trailed:
Britney Spears shaving her head
Anna Nicole Smith dying
That’s crazy and tragic impressive company for Ricki to be included in.
“I f–king love the cover! It’s amazing!” Lake said. “So many people from my past have come forward telling me how great I looked, and it has been an overwhelming response. I am thrilled with everything and love the way I look on the cover and in the
magazine.”
It just goes to show that Americans can’t get enough of a good weight loss story. Why else would
Jared Fogle still be on TV?
Or
Valerie Bertinelli be in the news again?

Akon Jailbait Reveals Racy Self On MySpace May 11th, 2007 by Free Britney
We were pretty sure Hayden Panettiere had the jailbait market cornered, but she’s apparently got nothing on Danah Alleyne.
While the dust is settling for Akon after his simulated rape of a 15-year-old Minister’s daughter on stage in Trinidad, some racy photos of the girl have emerged … on (where else) her
MySpace page.
Danah Alleyne, or as she call herself on MySpace, “Diva Trixie,” claims to be 19 and writes, “I’m a BITCH oh well… ima bitch, ive got class, mess wid me and i’ll kick ur ass!”
We’ll keep that in mind, Diva Trixie. Sounds like a line straight out of the
Kristin Cavallari playbook from Season 2 of Laguna Beach.
Anyway. It seems to the Gossip that a 15-year-old searching for her identity may not want to go looking for it in an 18-and-over club… or an Akon show.
Just the same, Danah has posted a picture from the night of the controversial event (below), and the caption says, “girls nite out! best time!!”
Um, yeah. Not quite the way she described it the Trinidad Express.
The rapper is
in hot water after inviting Danah Alleyne on stage, under the guise of giving her the chance to win a trip to Africa.
But the “trip to Africa,” the Trinidad Express reports turned out to be more like a trip on the baloney pony.
Akon was “turning, twisting and even flipping [her] body,” “mimicking sexual positions” and “sandwiching” the girl with the aid of another performer.
The recent collaborator of
Snoop Dogg and Eminem and tour-mate of Gwen Stefani was axed by his sponsor, Verizon, and may face legal action over his antics - what officials are calling a “simulated rape” of the girl.

Look at her face, though. While our celebrity gossip writers aren’t taking sides, this discovery certainly casts doubt on her supposed unwillingness to let Akon smack that.
Interestingly, since the posting of this story, which first appeared on TMZ, little Miss Danah set her MySpace page to “private.” Hmm.

Fashion Face-Off: Stacy Keibler vs. Kelly Clarkson May 11th, 2007 by mischalova
Kelly Clarkson may start getting tired soon.
Coming off a day in which we matched her up with
Carrie Underwood in a battle of American Idol champions, now the talented singer is being put through another grueling battle. This time, celebrity fashion reputations are at stake.
In the picture below, the Grammy-winning artist is standing next to former WWE Diva
Stacy Keibler. And they’re wearing the same outfit!

Apparently it’s not just Vanessa Minnillo and Eva Longoria that shop at the same store.
So let us know, readers, which of these lovely ladies looks better? And which would be more successful: Keibler on the American Idol stage? Or Clarkson inside a
WWE ring?

Jaime Pressly Becomes Latest Unwed Hollywood Mom May 11th, 2007 by Free Britney
Move over, Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Step off,
Jennifer Meyer.
My Name is Earl star Jaime Pressly, 29, gave birth Friday morning to a baby boy, Dezi James Calvo, adding to the list of engaged, but unmarried moms who apparently misread the manual.
But congratulations go out to Jaime just the same. According to Pressly’s rep, Dezi was born at 7:31 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He weighed in at 6 pounds, 4 ounces.
It is her first child with fiancé Eric Cubiche, 32, to whom she has been engaged since last October.
Jamie Pressly found out she was pregnant after taking nine pregnancy tests to be sure.
“After the first one, Eric said, ‘Really? Take another one,’” she said.
The couple said they were planning to name the baby “Dezi James” - even if it were a girl - because of their longstanding joke in which Cubiche calls out, “Luuuucy, I’m hooome!” whenever he comes home, a la Desi Arnaz in the television show I Love Lucy.
Eric Cubiche, like Arnaz, is of Cuban descent. We guess that makes the kid’s name okay. Either way, it’s no
Suri Cruise.
Pressly initially denied media reports that she was pregnant because she was only one-and-a-half months along and was worried about miscarriage.
“I lied and lied and lied!” she said.
When she was four months along, the actress told Us that it so far had been an uneventful pregnancy.
“I live off Tylenol,” she confided. “The mood swings you can’t do anything about. You want to stab people and you don’t know why! I’m still tired. You wake up sleepy.”
Kind of like how
Lindsay Lohan lives off coke and booze.
Cubiche, who works as a DJ, proposed to the actress on October 17 after a year of dating, but like
François-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek, the couple has not yet set a wedding date.
The actress has said that she plans to drop those post-pregnancy pounds by her next birthday on July 30. “I want to lose the baby weight by my 30th birthday!” she said in November.
“Three weeks after I have the child I’ll be back in the gym 4-5 days a week two hours at a time. I can’t wait to get my body back.”
That’s what
Britney Spears was saying after giving birth to Jayden James. Now if we can just get her into some normal clothes.

Shanna Moakler to Paris Hilton: Ha! Ha! May 11th, 2007 by mischalova
We don’t know how
Kim Kardashian feels about the time in the slammer for her former best friend.
But we can now tell you where
Shanna Moakler stands regarding the prison sentence handed out to Paris Hilton: on the side of karma.

The former Dancing with the Stars contestant and Miss USA wrote the following on her often-used MySpace page: i guess you all might be wondering what i think about all the karma going around…i guess all i have to say is….stupid is as stupid does.
Snap, yo. Snap.
Shanna and Paris have not gotten along for months, of course. It started when Hilton was seen making out with Moakler’s ex (and now current) husband,
Travis Barker. It escalated when Shanna accused Paris of having herpes.
With Hilton actually headed for jail (aka the second home of
Jason Wahler), there’s no doubt that Moakler will have the last laugh for awhile. But she better be careful with all that “stupid” name calling she’s throwing around.
Word around the
celebrity gossip circles is that Paris is actually rubber and Moakler is glue. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, Shanna.

Before Grey’s Anatomy star
T.R. Knight came out of the closet last year, some advised him not to do it, the 34-year-old actor revealed in a new interview.
While friends were “beautifully supportive,” Knight tells The Advocate in its June 19 issue, others cautiously advised him, “Don’t do it - don’t do it now.”
Looking back, the 34-year-old has no regrets.
“I remember saying to someone when I got one of those don’t-do-it comments - I just remember hearing my voice being calm and saying, ‘No, it’s going happen. It’s going to happen. I’m just letting you know.’”
Ultimately, T.R. Knight (left) is glad he made the decision to go public after his castmate,
Isaiah Washington (right), called him a gay slur. Washington, in an argument with Patrick Dempsey on set, referred to Knight as a f@gg*t.

“I made the decision to make a statement,” Knight says. “I could have not [spoken up]. I could have retreated. But I’m definitely happy I made the decision.”
Around the same time,
Neil Patrick Harris came out of the closet, saying rumors by people such as Perez Hilton made him want to quiet speculation and move forward in life.
As for Knight’s outing, Washington has since apologized, entered therapy, and is appearing in public service announcements on behalf of gay rights groups.
Since coming out, Knight, who plays the unassuming Dr. George O’Malley on the hit ABC drama, has seen his
Grey’s Anatomy character marry Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and sleep with fellow interns Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).
Off camera,
Katherine Heigl is a close friend of Knight, but she says the actor came out to her much more gradually.
“There came a point where we were close enough friends that he would just talk about dates or about other guys,” Heigl told The Advocate. “I wasn’t shocked or surprised…. It was more just like, ‘Oh, okay, now I know why you don’t want to go out with me.’”
Knight, who is single - “Not that I’ve had the most successful dating experiences,” he says - insists coming out hasn’t much affected his love life. He says he still assumes people aren’t interested in him, but notes:
“Too much aggression isn’t a good thing, either.”
We assume that remark is meant for
Jason Wahler.
